This unique district lets you grab your favorite beer, wine, or cocktail (in a special 16 oz. Social District cup) from participating bars and restaurants and enjoy it as you explore our charming streets, shops, and public spaces. Whether you’re here for an event, a casual night out, or just soaking in the local scene, you’re free to sip and stroll your way through downtown Ionia!
The Discover Ionia Social District can be enjoyed by adults 21 and over daily from 10 AM to 10 PM. Please dispose of your cup responsibly before exiting the designated area or entering another business.
How to Participate:
- Visit any participating Discover Ionia Social District permitted establishment and request a Social District Cup to enjoy your beverage while strolling the district.
- Be sure to stay within the designated area depicted by Social District boundary signage. Beverages must be purchased in Discover Ionia Social District cups to be taken outside an establishment, and these cups must remain within the district’s boundaries. Signage indicates those boundaries.
- Properly dispose of your Social District cup when empty.
- Enjoy and drink responsibly!
All State of Michigan and City of Ionia laws regarding public intoxication, impaired driving, and open containers apply to areas both inside and outside of the Social District boundaries.
Rules and Regulations:
- Drink from designated Social District Containers ONLY.
- NO outside alcohol allowed.
- Each cup is 16 oz. and is for one-time use.
- Stay within the designated Common Area. Look for signs indicating boundaries.
- Do not take your cup from one establishment into another.
- Dispose of your cup properly.
Where Can and Can’t Social District Cups Go?
Can Go:
- Inside the Social District Common Area
- Back into the establishment where the Social District cup was purchased
- Permitted to cross over the Fred Meijer River Valley Trail to access other establishments within the district’s commons area; however, the trail itself is not included as a space where social district beverages may be consumed.
Can’t Go:
- Social District cups cannot be taken into another alcohol serving establishment where they were not purchased.
- Social District drinks cannot go outside the Common Area.
- Social District drinks cannot be taken onto private property.
- Social District drinks cannot go into businesses that do not serve alcohol.
- Social District Cups cannot be in the Common Area after 10 PM or before 10 AM.
- Social District Cups cannot be taken inside barricaded outdoor events, unless specifically permitted.
- The Fred Meijer River Valley Trail itself is not included as a space where social district beverages may be consumed.

A: Beer, wine, and liquor are all allowable drinks when served in a designated container. The only drinks allowed are those purchased from businesses participating in the social district. No cans, glass bottles, or outside drinks are permitted within the boundaries per State and local law.
Q: How many drinks can I purchase at one time?
A: You may only purchase 2 two alcoholic drinks at one time per person.
Q: What businesses are participating?
A: Participating businesses will have a Discover Ionia Social District sticker or sign posted. A complete list can also be found on the City of Ionia website and social media pages.
Q: Are pets allowed in the Social District?
A: Yes! Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome in outdoor areas. Please clean up after your pet.
Q: What happens if I leave the Social District boundaries with a drink?
A: Taking alcohol outside of the marked district boundaries violates local and state laws. Please respect the signage and boundary lines to avoid penalties.

A: The boundaries are marked with street signage, sidewalk decals, and maps posted throughout downtown. Participating businesses can also provide guidance.
