Headlined by Ionia County native and Grammy Award-winning bluegrass artist Billy Strings, this sold-out festival is expected to bring visitors from across Michigan and beyond for an unforgettable weekend of music and community.

Plan Ahead for I-96 Construction
If you’re traveling to Ionia for the Ionia Freak Fair, please be aware that significant construction along I-96 may impact travel times.
Before leaving, check your route and allow extra travel time. Depending on where you’re coming from, alternate routes may help you avoid delays and make your trip more enjoyable.

Explore Downtown with the Billy Strings Guitar Scavenger Hunt
While you’re in town, take part in the Billy Strings Guitar Scavenger Hunt, presented by the Ionia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Ionia Downtown Development Authority.
Throughout August, guitars are hidden at participating businesses across Ionia County. At each stop:
- Visit participating locations.
- Snap a selfie with the guitar.
- Scan the QR code displayed on the guitar.
- Earn another entry toward the Grand Prize with every guitar you find.
The scavenger hunt runs August 1–31, making it a fun way to explore local businesses before and during festival weekend.

Kick Off Festival Weekend at the Summer Night Market
Arriving early? Be sure to visit the Ionia Farmers Market Summer Night Market on Thursday, August 27, from 4–8 PM in downtown Ionia.

As the official kickoff to Freak Fair weekend, this final Summer Night Market of the season is expected to draw a large crowd and is a great opportunity to experience the welcoming spirit of downtown Ionia before the concerts begin.
Enjoy the Discover Ionia Social District
While exploring downtown, take advantage of the Discover Ionia Social District. The Social District allows visitors to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating licensed establishments and enjoy them outdoors within the designated district boundaries while shopping, dining, and exploring downtown.
It’s a great way to experience Ionia’s vibrant downtown, support local businesses, and enjoy the festival atmosphere before or after the shows. Please remember to follow all Social District rules, including using approved cups and remaining within the designated boundaries.

The Ionia County Health Department has compiled a list of licensed seasonal and temporary campgrounds throughout Ionia County for visitors attending the Ionia Freak Fair.
