Trails & Recreation

Ionia is a hub in Michigan’s expanding trail network, offering scenic routes and direct links to dozens of trail towns across the state. Two major trails run through the city:

  • Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail connects Ionia west to Lowell (13 miles) and east to Portland, St. Johns, and Owosso via the Clinton–Ionia–Shiawassee Trail.
  • Fred Thwaites Grand River Trail offers local access along the Grand River through Cascade and Ada Townships in Kent County, allowing access to the Grand Rapids trail network across West Michigan.

These trails link Ionia to over 120 miles of riding surface and 18+ trail towns, with access to hundreds more miles across western Michigan. You will also find more than a dozen city parks offering green space, playgrounds, and gathering spots across the community.
